In the summer of 1983, the world-famous children's author Roald Dahl spends his days at his country house. The respected senior gentleman, overcoming severe back pain, is eagerly preparing his latest novel, “The Witches”, for publication, which is set to become a bestseller. Meanwhile, a major reconstruction of his family home is underway, as he has divorced his wife after 30 years of marriage in order to propose to his long-time lover.

In a recently-published critical review of a book depicting the events of the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, Dahl compares Israel to Hitler's Third Reich and its people to 'murderous nuns’. His anti-semitic statements spark an uproar in the press and literary circles. On a hot summer afternoon, an unexpected confrontation occurs in Dahl's family home, forcing the writer to make a choice: publicly apologize or risk his name and reputation. Personalities clash, and the possibility of redemption arises...

The case of Roald Dahl, which became an international sensation forty years ago, resonates just as strongly today. Based on true events, Mark Rosenblatt’s debut play “Giant” offers a devilishly charismatic portrait of an icon and, through pitch-black humor, explores the difference between a considered opinion and dangerous rhetoric. Are we entitled to express an opinion on everything? Should an artist’s personal views be judged separately from their work? Does reputation hold any value in a world that disagrees with you?
